The population of Childress county is 7,707. Childress is the
largest community in Childress county. Childress county is 64%
Anglo, 21% Hispanic, and 14% Black. Childress Independent School
District has 1,199 students. Childress County was created by the Texas
Legislature in 1876 and named in honor of George C. Childress, a
member of the 1836 convention and co-author of the Texas
Declaration of Independence.
