by Amber Smith

August 27, 2007

Welcome to

Mrs. Smith's 2nd Grade

Dear Parents,

I am so glad to have your child in my class this year!  It will be a very exciting and important year for your child with may new things to learn.  A good learning experience is built on a cooperative effort between parent, child, and teacher.  My expectations for conduct and academic growth are high.  With your help and encouragement both at home and in the classroom, we can look forward to a productive, creative, and fun year.

I would like to share with you some important information about my classroom beliefs and expectations.

  • I believe children deserve respect.
  • I believe children should not be humiliated, hurt, or embarrassed.
  • I believe a child's self-esteem is delicate and should be nurtured.
  • I believe my job is to teach until a child learns.
  • I want your child to enjoy learning and develop his/her own motivation for learning.
  • I believe that modeling is the most powerful way to affect a child's learning.  Please model the love of learning at home by reading to and in front of your child.

If we all do our part, your child will be very successful this year!  Thank you for your cooperation on this.  I look forward to meeting all of you soon.  I am ready for a positive, productive and healthy year at C.E.S.  If you have any questions or concerns please visit me during my conference from 9:40 - 10:25 am everyday.

Sincerely,

Amber Smith

Third Grade Teacher

ATTENDANCE:

Attendance at school is VITAL to your child's success in school.  Every day in my class will involve a lot of information that the student will need to have.  If your child is absent, a note from is REQUIRED for documentation purposes.  Please send this note the following day of the absence.  Please try to schedule doctor's appointments for later in the afternoon.  Each time your child is out of class, they are losing valuable learning time and can easily get behind in their work.

HOMEWORK FOLDER:

Each student will have a homework folder that will have any homework that is due, notices from C.E.S., the behavior calendar for the week and from time to time other important papers for you to see.  Please check your child's folder each night and help your child to stay organized and prepared.  I expect that the students are responsible EACH DAY for the work that is due.  Thank you for your help with this!

HOME-READING:

Your child MUST read at least 20 minutes for 4 NIGHTS each week in their AR book.  They will have to earn 3 points (from AR tests) each week to stay up with their AR point goal.

 DISCIPLINE:

In order to maintain a positive learning environment in the classroom, disruptive behavior and inattentiveness will have to be controlled.  For each new day, each behavior problem has its consequence.

  • 1st offense:  verbal warning and clothes pin moved from green to yellow
  • 2nd offense:  another verbal warning and clothes pin moved again from yellow to orange
  • 3rd offense:  third warning and pin moved from orange to red and note home
  • 4th offense:  clothes pin moved from red to black, trip to office, and note or phone call home

Discipline will be noted on the daily behavior calendar in the homework folder.  Fighting, rock throwing and other severe infractions will be dealt with immediately in the office, regardless of the number of checks recorded at that time.  My job is to teach and I will not allow any student to prevent me from doing my job due to their misbehavior.
