6th Grade English

by Connie Inman

January 02, 2007

Hi!  I'm Connie Inman.  This is my fourteenth year to teach 6th grade English, twenty-second year to teach, and I probably taught you or someone related to you.  How the years fly!

Remember your first day in jr. high?  Remember all the great things about being a jr. high student---first pep rally, first dance, first time you didn't have a scheduled bathroom break, and didn't have to walk in a straight line?  Lots of excitement accompany those "firsts", but with all those, also come the challenge of responsibility.

As we approach your child's 6th grade year, education becomes a gateway into higher learning.  Concepts and curriculum become more difficult; accountability and responsibility your child faces emerge as a challenge for the first time.  Many sixth graders and parents are unaware that these are the initial steps of maturing as a student.  Let me encourage you to help your child with organizational skills and checking in with your child to see what he/she is learning in my class.  We keep all assignments in a binder, which doesn't leave the classroom until the end of the year.  This helps me check progress throughout the year, and during parent conferences is a window into a student's classroom activities and progress.

Each of my classes is broken into several segments.  Bell ringers, convention practice and review, and grammar/writing lessons.  This keeps the 50 minute class interesting, and allows kids some variety in instruction.  Our focus is learning to write fluent, well-organized, interesting forms of composition.  This involves lots of practice, editing, and revision, but the final product, hopefully, is a unique piece of writing that expresses your child's individual style.

In this class, one rule will be enforced:  no one will interrupt any student's learning or my teaching.

Feel free to visit my classes at anytime.  I will update this site for your enjoyment and as a telescope into your child's education.  Hope you enjoy it!

Sincerely,

Connie Inman
