CHS Drama Department

"Drama Diva"

by Hannah Lathem

August 20, 2007

I am thrilled to be apart of this campus teaching the subjects that I'm passionate about, theatre arts and speech.  I have big plans for the year and I expect no less than excellence because Childress High School has an abundance of talent, and I am all about exploiting it!

The drama department will definitely be busy this year.  In addition to the UIL one-act play that we will have in the spring, I'm also hoping to produce a play for the winter.  The play will also be a one-act, but it will not be performed for contest, only for the community. I'm hoping this addition will give our dedicated actors an extra chance to shine.  The winter play will also serve as a great warm-up to contest season.

Concerning UIL academics, I will be coaching the speech events:  persuasive and informative speaking, prose, and poetry.  I firmly believe that these events give the students great speaking skills they can take with them to college and their careers.  Speaking events can also serve as an additional creative outlet to those students whose talents are in those fields.  I plan on starting early because these events take practice, and I also hope to enter a few practice tournaments, so we can knock out the competition at district in the spring.

I hope to also bring the same energy and passion to my classroom subjects.  I want my classroom to be about discovery.  I want my students to discover the importance of speech in everyday life, and how successful speech can translate into a successful life.  In addition to learning the basics (we all have to start with a foundation), I want my students to learn from master orators and how the art of speech made a difference in their lives.  I'm also hoping to invite professionals from the community whose careers depend on professional speech.  But, more importantly, they will doing a great deal of speaking themselves because that's the best way to learn.
