STUDENT COUNCIL

What is a Student council?

by Missy Farley

August 21, 2007

Student Council is an effective educational instrument. In its beginning, the idea might have been to form a "mock government," but it has evolved into a unique agency for genuine learning. The idea required individual commitment and individual involvement from the students. It is a group of elected students in the school who meet together to:

Promote Citizenship by:

  • Helping each student develop a regard for law and order
  • Leading each individual in developing a sense of responsibility and self respect
  • Encouraging desirable attitudes, good citizenship, and honesty traits

Promote Leadership by:

  • Providing young people with the power and right to speak and the privilege of being heard by those in authority
  • Providing coordination between staff and students
  • Promoting opportunities for leadership among student body members

Each year we elect five to seven students from each of the three grade levels at Junior High to become members of the Junior High Student Council.

We are involved in several different activities throughout the school year, such as:

Red Ribbon Week, which is held in October. During this time we work with our school counselor, Mrs. Parker, to improve the understanding of, and consequences of, drug use and abuse. Members use many different tools to get the message out to all other student body members that Childress schools are a DRUG FREE ZONE.                                                                                                                                             At Thanksgiving, we hold a canned food drive for our community.

For fund raisers, we sell candy canes during December and chocolates during Valentine's Day week. The proceeds are used for various different needs for the community and school.

Members of the student council are also responsible for the marquee in front of the school. It is used for getting important information out to our parents about upcoming events.
